There are some simple things you can do to clear the energy in your own home or office. Now, these techniques won’t do you much good if you’re trying to get rid of a spirit that has lived there since ol’ man Wilson died of cholera in the basement back in 1925! But, for just getting rid of old, stale energy and making the place feel lighter, these will work just fine.
The simplest of all is to open the windows! Along with the fresh air, you’re also introducing fresh energy. (Use common sense: if the garbage dumpster is outside the window, try a different technique!)
Smudging is one of the most common ways of clearing energy, and one of the most common tools for smudging is a smudge stick (!), which is a bundle of dried plants, such as sage, sweetgrass, or lavender. You light one end of the bundle and it gives off fragrant smoke as it smolders. (You don’t want an actual flame, just embers, or it may not smoke. And it may be necessary to keep something under it to catch sparks as you smudge.) Then, using the smudge stick like a wand, you direct smoke into all the corners and out-of-the-way places in the area you’re clearing. Hold it close to the floor in corners of the room and allow the smoke to rise to the ceiling before you move it to the next place. Wave it along the wall as you move from corner to corner. Don’t forget behind the curtains, and anyplace else that seems a likely place for energy to be lurking. Then be sure to give it a good swirl in the middle of the room, too. You don’t want to get the room too smoky; it’s more important that you pay attention to what you’re doing and hold your intention in mind as you work. If the smoke alarm goes off you overdid it!
Misting is a good way to clear an area where smoking isn’t allowed (such as your cubicle at work). This is a recipe courtesy of my wife, Jill. In a small misting bottle like a perfume mister, mix distilled or filtered water, a few drops of Rescue Remedy (from the Bach Flower Essence company), and a few drops of essential oil of peppermint, orange, or lavender. It’s very important to use genuine essential oil, not fragrance. Then mist this mixture around your work space in the same basic manner as if you were smudging.
One of the most important aspects of energy clearing is your intent and your attention. So, when you do any of these techniques, make it your intent that you’re going to clear out all the old inappropriate energy in your space, and pay attention to what you’re doing.
